TGDRT #9 – Journey of a Part-Time Indie

Episode #9 is now up!

This week Jon and Dirk are joined by Jesse Howard, an academic turned part-time tabletop designer – at age 40. They delve into Jesse’s ongoing journey to develop ‘Ploy’, a promising and innovative abstract card game. The design of Ploy is a very interesting case, as Jesse began with mechanics and only later added theming, which is the opposite approach of our hosts. Along the way, the group explores what they believe to be THE key to game development success.

I know I say it a lot, but this was a great episode. Jesse may only be making his first foray into game development but even after a single game of Ploy I was amazed at his innate design talent.  He’s also one of those people who just “gets it,” and when he says he’s going to do something – it’s going to happen. If you want an idea of what it takes to be an indie, make sure you give #9 a listen!

  1. It was a good episode. I immediately went on BGG to find him or his game, but it just isn’t there. I also couldn’t find a website for his game. Just the old 3M title.
